Online fraudsters deceived a 63-year-old woman from Los Angeles into believing she was romantically involved with Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias.
Guadalupe Cepeda, a longtime admirer of the “Bailamos” artist, was stunned when he allegedly reached out to her via social media.
Accordingly to her, he found her through an online fan group, and she never questioned why a global music star would single her out for a virtual romance.
Their online relationship, which began two years ago, convinced Cepeda that she would eventually marry Iglesias. Despite already being married, she was willing to leave her husband to be with the singer. However, before they could be together, he asked her for financial assistance.
Over the two years, Guadalupe spoke to Enrique via message, she ended up sending him several thousands of dollars, thinking that he actually needed the money.
At one point, when his insistence that she send him money became too much, she told him that she didn’t have a job anymore, but he ruthlessly told her to steal it from her husband or find another source if she really wanted to be with him.
The gullible woman’s husband allegedly learned about the scam after discovering their conversations on her phone. Only instead of confronting her and threatening to leave, he struggled to open her eyes.
He tried explaining to her that she wasn’t really talking to Enrique Iglesias, but someone impersonating him to exploit her financially, but she wouldn’t hear of it. Not even tracing the source of the star’s messages to Nigeria changed her mind.
Guadalupe’s husband was very understanding, despite her refusal to accept the obvious. He came up with the idea of going on Univisión’s Primer Impacto program to tell her romantic story in the hope of finally making her realize the truth. The segment went viral, and soon, the entire world knew about her relationship with a scammer posing as Enrique Iglesias.
Shockingly, even after going on public television, Guadalupe still isn’t convinced that the man she has been exchanging texts with for the past couple of years isn’t the real Enrique Iglesias. Her husband has appealed to the Spanish singer to come out and clarify that it wasn’t him talking to his wife.

“What I feel is sincere. My marriage is ending because I’m in love with you,” Cepeda told the Spanish singer.
Although Enrique didn’t react to this unusual story at first, he recently posted on Instagram, instructing fans to be vigilant and only trust his official channels in order to prevent similar scams.
Interestingly, such brazen scams have become more frequent recently. Just a few months ago, we wrote about a 63-year-old French woman who believed she was in an online relationship with Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt and sent him around 800,000 over several years.
