This terrible incident occurred during an alleged argument in which her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, set her on fire. She suffered from smoke inhalation and has burns over 75% of her body. Rebecca’s organs failed despite receiving treatment in a Kenyan hospital, and she tragically died.
After an argument outside their Kenyan house, Ndiema allegedly threw gasoline on Rebecca on September 2, marking the attack. Residents after hearing the disturbances, assisted in removing Dickson and Rebecca from the fire and took them to the hospital.
A land dispute was the source of the couple’s alleged arguments. Many people have been profoundly grieved by the news of her passing, and it has drawn attention to the issue of domestic abuse, particularly in Kenya and Uganda which people believe it’s about time it gets resolved.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning. Rebecca tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” the Ugandan Athletics Federation said in a public statement expressing their sadness. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”
The President of Athletics Kenya, Jack Tuwei, also spoke out against the violence, calling it “very unfortunate and sad” that people would harm each other over disagreements about property. He stressed that this is not how people should treat each other, especially in a relationship. Many have expressed their anger over the increase in violence against women in the region.
Rebecca was not only an Olympian but also a mother of two children. Her death has left her family and community in deep sorrow. This terrible event has highlighted the need for more protection against domestic violence in African countries, where victims often don’t get the help and safety they need.
According to the police, Dickson Ndiema entered Rebecca’s home while she was at church, carrying a five-liter container of gasoline. When she returned, an argument broke out, and he set her on fire. Authorities are now investigating the case, and many people are calling for justice as the world mourns the loss of such a talented athlete.
Rebecca Cheptegei’s death is a powerful reminder of the ongoing issue of violence against women. Her story urges people to work toward stronger laws, better community support, and more education to stop these tragedies from happening in the future.
