American rapper Macklemore recently made headlines by canceling an upcoming concert in Dubai, originally scheduled for October.
He stated his decision was in response to the United Arab Emirates’ alleged involvement in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, specifically through its reported support of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The rapper, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, born June 19, 1983 who is better known by his stage name Macklemore is an American rapper. A native of Seattle, Washington, he started his career in 2000 as an independent artist releasing: Open Your Eyes (2000), The Language of My World (2005), and The Unplanned Mixtape (2009). He rose to international success collaborating
expressed his solidarity with the people of Sudan through a post on Instagram. He mentioned being urged by fans to cancel his Dubai show to protest the UAE’s actions in Sudan.
He also tied his decision to his recent public stance supporting Palestinians amid the conflict in Gaza, further showcasing his commitment to global humanitarian issues.
The RSF, a group that emerged from the Janjaweed fighters during Sudan’s Darfur conflict, has been accused of various human rights violations, contributing to a severe humanitarian crisis in the region.
The UAE’s claimed involvement in the Sudanese war has gained increased attention as a result of Macklemore’s declaration. Despite the UAE’s denials, assessments from UN specialists imply otherwise, claiming proof that weapons were being transferred from northern Chad to the RSF.
This has led to further scrutiny of the UAE’s involvement, with Sudan’s government directly accusing the UAE of arming the RSF during a United Nations Security Council meeting in June.
Macklemore, best known for his Grammy-winning song “Thrift Shop,” has been vocal about his social and political views throughout his career. His decision to cancel the Dubai concert reflects his ongoing commitment to using his platform to address global injustices.
