Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis Presley, shared a very personal and emotional story in her memoir, From Here to the Great Unknown.
After her son Benjamin Keough died by suicide in 2020 at the age of 27, Lisa Marie made the unusual decision to keep his body at home for two months. This was her way of dealing with the deep pain of losing her son.
Riley Keough, Lisa Marie’s daughter, explained in the book “They told us that if we could tend to the body, we could have him at home, so she kept him in our house for a while on dry ice.” She continued: “It was really important for my mom to have ample time to say goodbye to him, the same way she’d done with her dad
Lisa Marie, struggling with her grief, decided to keep him with them, using dry ice to preserve his body.
She felt that having him close gave her more time to say goodbye, much like she did when her father Elvis died.
Although this may seem strange to others, it helped Lisa Marie handle her loss in a way that brought her some comfort.
Benjamin’s body was kept in a cool room in their home. For Lisa Marie, it became normal to have him there as she mourned. She took care of him and felt closer to him during that time.
While most people might find this difficult to understand, it was her way of coping with her sadness.
Something special happened during this period. Riley and Lisa Marie made the decision to match Benjamin’s tattoos.
In an unexpected turn of events, Lisa Marie asked the tattoo artist who they had invited to their house if he would want to examine Benjamin’s body in order to better understand the designs.
Riley said that, even considering their unique lifestyle, this was an odd and bizarre encounter.
The family shortly later felt that it was time for Benjamin’s body to be laid to rest. Both Lisa Marie and Riley felt that Benjamin’s presence was telling them it was time to move on.
Benjamin was later buried at Graceland, where he now rests alongside his mother, Lisa Marie, who passed away in January 2023.
Losing a child is one of the hardest things a parent can face. Lisa Marie’s decision to keep Benjamin’s body at home may seem unusual, but it was how she managed her grief.
It gave her the time she needed to come to terms with his death and to say goodbye in her own way.
Lisa Marie’s life was filled with both fame and pain. As Elvis Presley’s only child, she grew up in the public eye, but her personal life was marked by tragedy, including the loss of her father and son.

Their story, while sad, shows the deep love between a mother and her child, and the lengths Lisa Marie went to in order to find peace after such a painful loss.
