Pop sensation Justin Timberlake has had his driving privileges revoked two months after his arrest on suspicion of DUI.
On Friday, August 2, 2024, the singer’s driving license was suspended in the state of New York following his not-guilty plea to the charge of driving while intoxicated.
The 43-year-old musician, who is presently on tour in Europe and will perform there on Saturday, virtually appeared in a Sag Harbor courtroom on Friday to be re-arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated related to the June 18 incident.
As is customary following a DWI arrest, Sag Harbor Village Justice Carl Irace suspended Timberlake’s driver’s license for an indefinite amount of time.
Because Timberlake refused to submit to a breathalyzer test at police headquarters following his detention, the court informed Timberlake that he was suspending his driving privileges in the state of New York.
This comes after the singer’s lawyer, Edward Burke, filed an appeal to have his charges dropped on the grounds that his client was not driving while intoxicated.
Judge Irace allegedly chastised defense attorney Edward Burke during Friday’s hearing for his “irresponsible” remarks he made to reporters outside of court. Should the lawyer keep making comments like these, he threatened to place the lawyer under a gag order.
The 10-time Grammy winner’s Everything I Thought It Was world tour kept him away from his initial court appearance last week.
Driving a 2025 BMW UT with Florida license plates, Timberlake was pulled over by police on Madison Street and Germain Avenue in Sag Harbor, a little community around 100 miles east of New York City.
Police first stopped him when they saw him swerving. Timberlake reportedly refused to submit to a breathalyzer test and a field sobriety test after police stopped him, according to TMZ.
When Timberlake’s friends arrived on the scene, they made fruitless attempts to get the officers to release him. After that, Timberlake was placed under arrest and handcuffed; body cam footage is said to have captured the incident.
He appeared in court and was soon after freed from police custody.
In order to formally charge him with the offense, the court had to schedule an additional hearing due to a problem with paperwork. The artist is not required to appear at the upcoming court session, which is set for this Friday, August 9.
A driver’s license suspension lasting at least six months, a $1,000 (£786) fine, and a year in jail are the consequences for driving while intoxicated in New York.
