Celine Dion is expected to return to the stage at the Olympic Games, most likely during Friday, July 26, 2024’s opening ceremony.
It will be the pop legend’s first concert since she suspended her touring schedule and stepped away from the spotlight in December 2022 after being diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome.
Dion landed in Paris on Monday and checked into the Royal Monceau hotel near the Champs-Élysées, where Lady Gaga, another prospective opening ceremony star, is also staying. Details concerning Dion’s performance are being kept under wraps.
In an April interview with Vogue France, the Canadian singer hinted to a potential comeback, saying: “I’ve chosen to work with all my body and soul, from head to toe, with a medical team. I want to be the best I can be. My goal is to see the Eiffel Tower again!”
She also stated that she was trying every day to become stronger. “For four years I’ve been saying to myself that I’m not going back, that I’m ready, that I’m not ready… As things stand, I can’t stand here and say to you: ‘Yes, in four months,’” she said. “I don’t know… My body will tell me,” Dion told Vogue France.
It turns out that she may be performing in front of the renowned Parisian monument, since the opening ceremony will take the form of a maritime parade down the Seine, culminating near the Trocadero and facing the Eiffel Tower.
The event, which will take place outside of a stadium for the first time in history, will highlight Paris’ historic locations and feature 3,500 actors, dancers, and musicians.
Dion is no stranger to the Olympics. She opened the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta by performing “The Power of the Dream.” The ceremony was seen by a record 3.5 billion people worldwide.
Along with Michael J. Fox, the legendary performer recently voiced a commercial for Canadian Olympians titled “L’invincible courage.”
