Cate Blanchett got frank during her visit on “Watch What Happens Live” with Borderlands co-star Gina Gershon when host Andy Cohen asked about her earnings from the Lord of the Rings movies.
In the popular “Plead the Fifth” segment, Cohen asked Blanchett which film had earned her the biggest paycheck. Instead of directly answering, Blanchett asked Cohen to guess. “I think it’s probably Lord of the Rings,” Cohen suggested.
Blanchett, seemingly dodging the question, exclaimed, “Are you kidding me?! No, I didn’t get paid anything to do that movie!”
Cohen was taken aback and asked for more details. Blanchett explained, “I wanted to work with the guy who made Braindead,” referring to Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson’s 1992 zombie film. She added humorously, “I basically got free sandwiches, and I got to keep my ears — which is something they fed me.”

When Cohen pressed for the highest-paying role she had ever had, Blanchett remarked, “I mean, women don’t get paid as much as you think they do.”
Although it’s unlikely that Blanchett worked for free on the trilogy, her earnings might not have been as substantial as expected. Orlando Bloom once revealed on The Howard Stern Show that he was paid only $175,000 for the trilogy. Nonetheless, Bloom didn’t seem to mind, stating, “It was the greatest gift of my life. I’d do it again for half the money.”
During the same program, Blanchett and Gershon sang “Have! You!” Met Them!?” in which they revealed whether they had met any celebs.
When asked if she had met the late Queen Elizabeth, Blanchett replied that she had lunch at Buckingham Palace. What stood out was her interaction with Prince Philip. “He just asked if I could help him with his DVD player because I was an actress,” she added.
Cohen questioned if she helped him, to which Blanchett answered, “No, I didn’t! “I am not technical.”
