A lawyer for musician Justin Timberlake said on Friday that his client was not under the influence when he was arrested for DWI in the Hamptons last June.
Sag Harbor Village Justice Carl Irace ordered Timberlake’s re-arraignment on August 2 with revised proof, according to the Associated Press.
“Justin Timberlake was not intoxicated,” Timberlake’s attorney, Edward Burke, told reporters outside the court, according to the Associated Press. “I’ll repeat, he was not intoxicated.”
In a statement to CBS New York, Burke cited several key errors made by the police in this instance and expressed confidence that the charge would be dropped.
“The most important fact to know about this case is that Justin was not intoxicated and should not have been arrested for DWI,” according to Burke’s statement, adding that Timberlake “cooperated with the police officers at all times and treated them with the respect they deserve.”
Timberlake did not appear in court on Friday. In a statement to the AP, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office referred to the paperwork issue as a “ministerial error” and stated that an amended charge document was submitted on July 2.
“The facts and circumstance of the case have not been changed or amended,” spokesperson Emily O’Neil told the AP in an email.
How It Happened:
Timberlake was detained by police on Madison Street and Germain Avenue in Sag Harbor, a tiny village located around 100 miles east of New York City, while driving a 2025 BMW UT with Florida plates.
He was initially stopped after cops noticed his swerving. According to TMZ, after halting Timberlake, police gave a field sobriety test and asked for a breathalyzer test, which he declined.
Friends of Timberlake arrived on the scene and sought to persuade the officers to release him, but their efforts were futile. Timberlake was then handcuffed and arrested, with the incident purportedly captured on body cams.
He was released from police custody shortly after making his court appearance. His next court date is set on July 26.
