A chicken in Devon, England, has officially claimed the top spot in the pecking order after laying an egg so enormous it left her owners shell-shocked.
Gail, the aptly named chicken, delivered a colossal 175g egg three times the size of her usual 50g offerings. The family from Newton Poppleford cheered Gail on as she struggled for over five hours to lay the egg.

Rob Griffin, a 38-year-old father of three, found something even more astounding when he eventually cracked it open: another fully-formed egg hidden within its enormous shell.
“We’re not talking a double yolker here—this was a full-on ‘double egger,’” Rob said.
Eldest daughter Ruby, 12, was stunned by Gail’s rare achievement, while her younger sisters Elsie, nine, and Olive, three, were equally amazed. Watch the video below.
To provide background, chickens normally deposit eggs through their cloaca, a multipurpose outlet that handles eggs, excrement, and even mating. A healthy hen can lay one egg every day, but generating anything so large is nearly unheard of.
While modern hens can lay up to 300 eggs every year, Gail’s egg stands out as a unique example of chicken engineering.
