A shocking event took place on a street in Islington, North London, where a man set himself on fire while police officers and onlookers watched in horror.
Police officers from the Metropolitan Police quickly tried to put out the flames using fire extinguishers and a jacket. The frightening scene was recorded on video and widely shared on social media, with the sound of people screaming in the background.
The incident happened after police were called to a report of a family argument at a house on North Road, Islington. When the officers arrived, the man unexpectedly set himself on fire. He was later taken to the hospital for treatment of his burns.
A video shared online by London & UK Street News showed the man holding his hands above his head before falling to his knees as flames covered his body. The terrifying moment left onlookers visibly shaken, with some shouting in fear as police officers tried to help.
The flames continued to burn even after he was sprayed with foam from a fire extinguisher. One man was seen calling for water, while another officer took off his jacket to try and smother the fire.
“Police were called at around 09:25 a.m. on Friday, December 13, after receiving reports of a family dispute at a home on North Road, N7,” a police spokesperson said to The Mirror.
“Officers arrived and saw a man in the street who then set himself on fire. Officers, along with members of the public, put out the flames. The London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade also came to the scene.
“The man was taken to the hospital, and his condition is not life-threatening or life-changing. His family has been informed. One officer was also treated at the hospital for small burns and has since been released.

“The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed. Since the police were present when the man got injured, a required report has been sent to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service told The Mirror, “We sent medical teams to the scene, including ambulance crews, a response officer, and London’s air ambulance. We treated two people before taking them to the hospital.”
