A couple from Rogers, Arkansas, has been arrested after allegedly trying to sell their 2-month-old baby for a six-pack of beer and $1,000 at a campground, authorities say.
Darien Urban, 21, and Shalene Ehlers, 20, face charges of child endangerment and trying to sell their baby. The incident occurred at the Hide Away Campground and RV Park near Beaver Lake, according to a report filed by Benton County officials.
On September 21, the campground manager called the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, reporting that Urban and Ehlers had attempted to trade their baby for beer and later asked for $1,000.
Deputies arrived and immediately took the baby to the hospital for a checkup. The baby had severe diaper rash, blisters, swelling, and signs of neglect. Witnesses also noted a strong smell of ammonia and feces from the baby’s diaper, which contained dog hair, raising more concerns about the baby’s living conditions.
During the investigation, detectives found a document signed by Urban and Ehlers, attempting to transfer their parental rights to another man for $1,000.
The document stated, “I, Darien Urban, and Shalene Ehlers, are signing our rights over to (name withheld) of our baby boy for $1,000 on 09/21/2024.” The letter also stated that the couple could not change their minds or make contact again.
One man involved claimed he was helping the couple with the “adoption” in exchange for beer and money.

Urban and Ehlers admitted to agreeing to the deal, thinking they could make it legal by September 23. Both were arrested. Urban was released on a $50,000 bond, while Ehlers remains in jail on the same bond amount. The Arkansas Department of Human Services has taken custody of the child.
The investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear whether Urban and Ehlers have legal representation. This case has sparked public outrage, emphasizing the need for better child protection laws.
